Creating the Stability You Desire

This episode of Breaking Up with Corporate features communications expert Patty Deutsche. When oil refineries shut-down due to Covid, Patty was one of several hundred employees let go. She took this as an opportunity to create the stability and consistency she wanted and became the Founder & CEO of Volterra Communications. Patty is also the host of Your Daily Chocolate, a podcast featuring bite-sized feel good stories to lift your day.

I hope you enjoy this conversation. A few of the key takeaways from this episode include:

1. It can be terrifying - It's not easy to walk away from a job with steady pay, benifits, and bonuses. In fact it can be downright scary. It takes time to shake off those nerves and begin to open up to the amazing possibilities ahead.

2. Sharpen your skills - In the time between leaving your 9 to 5, and when you really hit your stride on your own venture, there can be some slow periods. Take that opportunity to learn new skills, or refresh old ones.

3. Take a walk - No, not in the halls or parking lot of your old corporate cage, but take a walk out in the fresh air of a local park, a hiking trail, or take a bike ride with your kids in the middle of the day. Because when you make your own schedule, you can take advantage of the small but important pleasures that you weren't able to enjoy before.

4. No one is going to do it for you - Whether you're still working for big business, or you're running your own smaller one, it's vital to take ownership. Work hard, do your work well, and be proud to have your name on it.

5. Speak up, ask questions - When you find yourself in new situations or learning new things, you can feel a bit intimidated seeking help or guidance. Get past that feeling and know you aren't alone. Asking good questions brings you good information.

6. Listen to your friends - We don't always see ourselves in a realistic light. Often we're our own harshest critics. Look to friends to give you feedback on what characteristics you possess to lead you onto a new career path. They often see qualities that we don't even realize we have.
